What do you use for motivation?

Does anyone else out there use pictures or other devices to give continual motivation? If so, what do you do?

I utilize my computer wallpaper, vision boards, and miriads of other things. Currently, I have a picture on my work laptop from the swim start of Steelhead 06. It serves two purposes.

First it keeps me grounded and humbled. The people in this picture are average people who trained hard for the event and fought many demons to get there. Although I do not know them, they are all inspiring me to go for my goals.

Secondly it shows me that health and fitness is only as good as what you put into it.

Now every morning when I fire up my laptop at work I am greeted with those thousands of faces getting ready to accomplish something great. I smile, and realize that I will get through today.

You know what? I WILL get through today. And tomorrow. And the next.

That is the beauty of life. It is really a journey.

I have a printed out copy of the Richmond Marathon map sitting at my desk. That's my motivation right now ... or is it a downer? We'll see...

i visualize someone holding two straws in their hand...

making my selection, i pull it out slowly, and it's always the long one...

i carry that straw with me into the task at hand.

I like Marcy's answer. On my facebook account, I have mental markers... I ran 150 miles. Let's see how long before I hit 200. At 500 I'm going to do something wild. What you ask?

Well, I am thinking new running shoes.

You know, it's the very existence of my blog that helps motivate me. Knowing that I report on my runs helps me stay honest and motivated.

Sometimes, just one of my coffee cups that I use in the morning motivates me. It says "Life is Good...do what you like, like what you do."

There are three great motivators in life, love, fear and greed. For me fear works the best.

So, when I am on the trainer, I visualize getting dropped by the pack in a road bike race, going up a hill, a big hill, like 5 mile hill in Kalamazoo.

So, I know all this stupid stuff I am doing on the trainer will help me climb and TT better, like doing a 1:03 40k ITT this year.

I just do it because I can. I guess that's all the motivation that I need. shrug.

Photos - for sure. Sometimes positive reinforcement (like race logos or race photos). Sometimes negative reinforcement (like photos of me in a bikini at 30lbs overweight - NOT PRETTY).
