TRIfecta for 30... completed!

And here is the RR for #3.

OK - so on 8/17 I ended my TRIfecta for 30. The race was my tri club's very own race - the Island Lake of Novi tri. It is in the middle of a beautiful subdivision (Island Lake of Novi, natch), and the course is quite interesting.

A big ole swim - not much to say, a bike with two loops of the main drag, and one loop of a minor bit to make up 11.4 miles, and a 3 mile run through sidwalks, streets, and trails. Very cool.

Island Lake of Novi - Sprint
Total time - 1:33:41
Result: 1st out of 5 in Athena ;-) Oh yes - I won overall Athena baby!
SWIM : 21:22 (2:40/100m)
T1 2:29 (this is without a wetsuit - the transition was THAT far away from the dismount line!)
BIKE : 34:23 (19.5mph)
T2: 1:29
RUN: 33:23 (11:08 pace)

Pre-race routine:
I made myself a breakfast burrito and drove the 5 minutes to the race site. I love racing locally! :) This being my last tri of the season, and 3rd this week, it really was sort of a crap shoot. I mean honestly I had a goal of sub 1:30 due to this being a short and flat course (FLAT), but I was pretty burnt out in the physical department. My legs had no juice in them!

Event warmup:
Arrived at Catholic Central High school and found Lana right away. I grabbed my transition bag and my bike pump and we boarded the bus. Oh yes. I was doing the tri, Lana the 1.6 mile open water swim, so due to this bieng a closed course with no way to get cars on the roads park, we all had to be shuttled in from the high school. Which meant that I had to drop off my bike the day beforehand. Interesting.

I set up my transition area while Lana picked up her registration materials (swim cap, etc.). Mike Mistak was in transition and was about to start his first triathlon!
After hanging out with fellow FASTers and Mike Mistak (henceforth to be called Mistak if only to not confuse him with my Mike), we had the pre-race meeting and then the waves started. I was in wave 4.

Swim

I tore up the first 350m! There were 5 people in my division (Athena) acording to our brightly yellow colored caps. My only goal was to beat this one girl on the bike. I know her for some reason. She beat me in my first race at the start of the season. I was going to beat her this race... I just had to for soem reason.

So the gun went off and I swam. I passed EVERY SINGLE ATHENA... but her. Oh well!
I was tired by the time I hit 600 meters, and my swim time reflects this... it was 2 minutes slower than Wednesday. I was 2 Athena out of the water.

What would I do differently?: Maybe not do 3 triathlons in a week if I really wanted to be fast! ;)

T1

I was shocked when I saw 2:29 for my T1 time - but then again, everyone else had similar if not longer times. The bike mount line was pretty far aways from the transition area.

What would I do differently?: Not a thing. It all went as planned yet again.

Bike

Seriously, who is this woman yet again? I passed every single person in front of me up until the end. I was passed by exactly 4 people. All men. All on Zipp 404's. I hate the sound of those discs on the road... if only because they are faster than I! ;) All in all my legs had NO go juice in them. I averaged just shy of 20mph... but it was a flat course, I should have done 21 or so.
It is interesting that I felr fine, but my legs would not turn over. I should say that it was frustrating.. because I really wanted that sub 1:30. I knew when I hit T2 that it was not going to happen.

What would I do differently?: Not expect a large mph after racing 2 other tris in 6 days before this race. Thank goodness my A race was Trex! ;)

T2 - This transition was OK but slow. 1:29

Run

Mistak saved my race. I was so dead tired by the start of the run I just wanted to sit down. I was not hurting, it was pure muscle exhaustion. So not I know that I can race 3 triathlons in 7 days. I also know that my legs are the first thing to succumb to the racing.

My run started off really slow - I think mile 1 was in at around 12:20 or so. Right before Mile 1, Mistak caught up to me and ran with me. Since this was his first tri he was still recovering from the swim. He runs faster than I do, so i decided to keep up with him. Thank goodness - he pulled me into the high 10's to finish in 33:23. Initially I thought that I had ran 11:46's... until I found out that the run was only 3 miles, not a full 5K.

The run was fun and with Mistak there, I was distracted and able to just run easy. Amazing thing - my easy running is sub 11 minute miles. Who is this girl?

Post race

Warm down: Walked around and ate with Lana and Melissa, then sat down to awards. I won a FAST beach towel in the raffle, and I got recognized for being the FAST NCC chair for '07 '08. Then I won 1st place Athena! I tell you what - THAT is how you end your first season.
What limited my ability to perform faster?: TRIfecta. But you know what? I am only getting stronger for it!

Event comments: LOVED this race!

TRIfecta part 2 - Done!

Sorry so late, but here is the RR for TRIfecta part dos - The T-Rex Triathlon.

Total time - 1:30:50Result: 12th out of 26 in AG (30 - 34) ;-)SWIM : 19:56 (2:29/100m)T1 1:19BIKE : 34:23 (20mph)T2: 1:09RUN: 33:02 (10:40 pace)
Pre-race routine:
Since this was an evening race - woooooot! - I was able to chillax all day before hand. Nice. Had some chicken and spaghetti for lunch, then worked on the bike. Fixed the shifting problem and adjusted my aero bars. No more noises, no more shifting issues.

Event warmup:
Got to ILRA and set up my transition area. Hung out with my Mike, Lisa, Lana, Jaclyn, Daves 1 & 2, Dan, his wife and daughter, Jo and her family and Trish and her family. Got in the water and froliced around a bit. Got on the bike and rode it all of around the parking lot to assure that it was in the correct gear. Good times folks, good times!
Swim
I am a slow swimmer still! We swam between blow-up dinosaurs instead of bouys. That was sweet. It was a half mile swim this week, versus the quarter mile I swam Sunday. This is a Personal Best for me - 1/2 mile (800yards) averaging 2:40/100yard. Sweet!
What would I do differently?: Swim faster. ;) But I am working on that! STILL!
T1
This transition was quicker than last week. I think having the race in teh evening makes me more focused.
What would I do differently?: Not a thing. It all went as planned yet again.
Bike
Seriously, who is this woman? My personal best on this exact course is 19mph. I honestly average 17.7mph to 18.5mph every single ride here. At the race, on the same course I averaged 20+mph! I was 102 overall on the bike - out of 400 or so athletes. In my age group - there were 26 of us, and I was 4th on the bike. I am doing something right, I tell ya!
What would I do differently?: Not a damn thing.
T2 - I got new laces AGAIN this week - that makes two pairs since Saturday, this time they are bungee-like, so my T2 is a PR, 1:09. Sweet!
Run
I decided to just run. I am 30. I am going to run. So I did.
I started to run and feel a little iffy in my tummy. I then started to get cramps, and not the leg type if you girls out there know what I mean. :( So I kept on running. Not so soon after I started Dave Potter passed me and told me that I was kicking ass, and to NOT let Lana pass me.
No sweat! I am a faster runner than her and passed her on the bike, but if she was anywhere close to me... she'd try to kick it up and sprint me to the finish, and I know that I had no kick left in me. So for 3.1 miles - I just tried to stay 1 minute ahead of her.
At mile 1 I saw her - sweet! I need to pick up the pace to get a good lead.
Mile 2 came with the wondering if there would be ANY water at all on the course. I was starting to get thirsty - my throat was dry and my head started to hurt. At the turn around to the finish line, which was maybe mile 2.25, there was the water. About time. I stopped running anf drank 3 glasses of water.
I was parched.
I ran in the finish strong - 1:30:50. That my friends is a HUGE PR.
Post race
Warm down: Walked around and ate with Mike, Lana (who finished just 3 minutes after I did), Jaclyn, Dave, Jo, Trish, and Dave 2. Saw Jer and Bonnie who had just finished their first triathlon! Way to go guys!
What limited my ability to perform faster?: My weight again.. and for the rest of this season at least. ;)

Event comments: RunnignFit puts on good running races, and this triathlon is one of the best ones I have seen so far! Next year there will be three races in the series, so I am definitely going to do all three!

Well - since I am two thirds of the way done with my TRIfecta - I am certainly stepping up the training this off season. My HIM is not just going to be a race to finish - it will be a race that I finish STRONG.

TRIfecta part 1... done!

Lansing Legislator Triathlon - Sprint
Total time - 1:34:02
Result: 2nd out of 7 in AG. ;)

SWIM : 14:38
T1 1:22
BIKE : 41:31
T2: 1:12
RUN: 35:12
Pre-race routine:

We camped at Sleepy Hollow campground to save time driving in the AM. It was myself, Lana, Al, Melissa, Dave and Jason. We grilled, jammed by the campfire (Al and Dave can play guitar well!) and hung out in the freezing cold tent. Oh did I mention the rain? Because it rained a lot! For a few hours on Saturday, then in spurts after the race on Sunday. I kid yo unot - the weather swung a good 10* quite a few times during the day on Sunday.

It was a great idea to camp out and so convinient as we were 5 minutes away from the transition area!

I strongly suggest camping out with a group of people before races.

Event warmup:

We woke up at 6:00AM (but also midnight, 1AM, 2AM, 3AM, 4AM, 5AM... etc. due to campmates *cough*Al*cough* and noisy neighbors), and then I ate a quick breakfast of 1.5 Cups of fat free milk mixed with 2oz of whey protein powder (unflavored). I tried an Apricot Clif Bar... but holy heck the Apricot flavor made me sick. YUCK. I nixed the bar and stuck with liquid nutrition. Smart move!

We then went down to get our numbers and to pick up our goodies. Then I came back up to the campsite and showered, got dressed, and headed back down to the area with bike and transition gear. Set up my transition in all of 5 minutes, got marked and headed to the water.

Given that there was an Oly in addition to the sprint, Male Olys went off at 8AM, female and relay Olys went off at 8:10 or so, and the waves of sprint started after 8:30AM. The water was chilly and WEEDY. I knew this but made the decision to NOT wear my wetsuit. Another smart move.

Swim

I am a slow swimmer! HOWEVER - I SWAM THIS FREESTYLE THE WHOLE WAY!!!! I am happy with that. We took off at 8:37AM and the start was a little rough. There were weeds... a lot of them. I made my way to the first double bouy in no time, and rounded it with no issue.

I headed towards the second double bouy and had no issues getting there either. I passed a few people on the swim which is still new to me. After rounding the second bouy I started to sight to the two beach bouys thinking that I need to go in between them, but about 150meters out I realized that I needed to go the right of the right-most bouy. Oops! Oh well I recovered and got out of the water in 14:38! This was my best swim in terms of stamina and strength.

I felt as if I could have kept on going. I know that I need to work on speed, but this race was all about just getting it done well. And I did!

What would I do differently?: Swim faster. ;) But I am working on that!

T1

This transition was quick - man I love not having to wear a wetsuit!

What would I do differently?: Not a thing. It all went as planned.

Bike

WOW! I took 1st overall bike in Athena and was 68th out of 191 in the sprint total! I am definitely a better cyclist than anything else right now. PERFECT ride.

I took off on the bike and right away passed 6 people. I then did something pretty cool - I kept passing people. I was about 2 miles into the ride when my friend Jason passed me and yelled out - I'll race you to the end. I saw him in transition and he was doing the Oly distance, so I back off a little and let him get ahead. Then it hit me - Jason is fast. He can keep up with the 20-23mph pack on our tuesday rides... I will take him up on the challenge and see how it plays out.

I kicked it up a gear and hammered past him. I yelled out to him "I will take you up on that!" I could tell that he was shocked that I was going to race him, so I just kept on hammering up the hills, down the hills and around the bend. He never once passed me again! After the race, Jason told me that he was shocked, but then he saw me hammering it pretty good so he tried to catch up, but then realized that he had twice to go than I did so he just hung back. Dang it! ;) I was really looking forward to a race!

There were two girls that I kept playing leap frog with. I was starting to think that they were getting annoyed with the game, but honestly it was because we rode similarly in technique and speed - but each of us had a stronger suit - for me it is uphills, I pass a lot of peopl up hill, for one it was the downhills, and for the third it was the straights.

On the last hill I hammered past them and they never caught back up! In fact it took them a mile in the run before I saw either of them again. Sweet!

What would I do differently?: Not a damn thing.

T2 - I am glad that I got the Synchroinfinity Pearl Izumis... made a world of difference not having to wear socks! No blisters no pain. I love it!

Run

It is sad that a girl who calls herself runnergirl has found out that running is her WORST sport of triathlon.

I worked it really hard on the bike and my legs were feeling it on the run. The good thing is that I never once felt the need to stop - I just kept on running.

When I was in the parking lot entering the finishing stretch all of a sudden my ankles were bound together! Oh yeah - my new laces had shreded and got wrapped around both of my ankles so I had to rip them apart while I ran! As I got to the finishing shoot, I picked it up to a sprint but there was no one in front of me to catch so I just ran it in strong.

I first saw Melissa, then Brickey and Clan. It was a good race.

What would I do differently?: I need to work on speed and strenght for next season. I am shocked that I finished averaging a sub 11:30 pace - my first mile was 12:22! I must have really picked it up there at the end. I know when I finished the last mile did go by really fast for me, so I think I put myself into a zone and just went with how my body felt versus any sort of pace goals.

Post race

Warm down: Walked around, talked to friends. In the food tent I caught up to SweetP and Amy Christena. I saw Hannah and we walked to her car, chatted, went back to MSUDan and wife and Melissa and we watched Dave come in from the Oly. We also caught Dan's daughter Samantha finishing the Oly run. After a bit, we walked around more, sat down stretched out and was able to catch Lana as she rocked it in for her first ever Oly finish!

Afterwards, we went back to the campsite and Trixie and my cousin came to visit and hang out! Trixie was so sweet - she brought a birthday cake, cupcakes AND a killer cherry pie for my birthday! Check out my photo album over on BT for a picture of the cake as well as pics from the race!

What limited my ability to perform faster?: My weight... duh!

Event comments: For a 3D race, it was actually well put. I think that the venue is why - a lot of people camping at the campgrounds were interested in helping out. Past 3D races have seemed to be very chaotic. I am happy overall with this race! What a wonderful birthday gift - great friends, great times, and an awesome weekend.
